The U.S. military has completed its withdrawal from Iraq, as confirmed by an Iraqi government official. This withdrawal was agreed upon by the U.S. and Iraq in 2024, with around 2,500 American troops remaining in the country until now. The U.S. and its allies had been involved in a campaign against ISIS since 2014, which led to the group's military defeat in Iraq in 2017. Despite this, ISIS cells remain active, and security in Iraq has deteriorated due to ongoing tensions with Iran. The withdrawal is expected to be celebrated in Iraq as 'Independence Day', with public institutions closing for four days. Plans for the disarmament of Iranian-aligned militias have been postponed until June next year.
