Three individuals, including a South Korean soldier, were injured due to a suspected landmine explosion in the Demilitarized Zone separating North and South Korea. The soldier sustained serious injuries during an operation involving the 25th Infantry Division. It remains unclear whether the mine was placed by North or South Korean forces. The DMZ, a 4 km wide buffer zone, is estimated to contain over 800,000 mines, many dating back to the Korean War. Following North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's official abandonment of reunification efforts at the end of 2023, new mines and fortifications have been established to strengthen the border.
