The incident involved 17 personnel swept away by waves, with ongoing searches for two missing soldiers. The Kazakh authorities reported a sudden deterioration in weather and strong winds as the cause. An investigation has been launched by the General Prosecutor's Office, and the Defense Minister has been dispatched to the region. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has tasked a government commission to determine the circumstances of the accident and assist the victims' families. The military exercises, named "Caspian Sea Defense - 2026," involved over 500 personnel from the Kazakh navy and other units.
