Commercial shipping traffic through the Sulina and Tulcea border crossings has significantly increased since July, with rises of up to 50%. This surge follows the cessation of commercial vessel transit through the Bâstroe Canal and Ukrainian ports due to Russian attacks. The Coast Guard reports a 25% increase at Sulina and 50% at Tulcea compared to last year. Despite the high number of vessels waiting to enter the Sulina Canal, the Coast Guard denies that border control activities are causing delays. Mixed teams conduct inspections on vessels entering and leaving the country. Following the blockade of Ukrainian Black Sea ports, some grain shipments have been redirected to the Danube ports, which have limited capacity, leading to competition for access with higher-priority shipments like fuel. Frequent air raid alerts have further disrupted operations, impacting global grain prices.
