Romania ranks 61st out of 70 in the IMD 2026 competitiveness ranking, falling behind Hungary and Bulgaria. The country has seen a significant decline in its score compared to previous years. Singapore leads the ranking, followed by Hong Kong and Switzerland, with several European countries also in the top 10. The IMD assessment evaluates economies based on 341 criteria across four pillars: economic performance, government efficiency, business efficiency, and infrastructure. Romania faces challenges such as improving public spending efficiency, boosting investments in innovation, and enhancing healthcare and education systems. The report highlights the importance of institutional credibility and innovation in driving competitiveness.
