His family announced his death, which occurred while he was working on a historical film in southern France. Gatlif directed 25 films, with "Gadjo Dilo" being one of his most notable works, showcasing a young Frenchman’s journey in Romania. He was celebrated for his focus on social stories and Roma culture. Born in Algeria, Gatlif moved to France at 12 and changed his name to avoid deportation. He expressed a lifelong struggle against his destiny and a deep respect for the people he encountered.
