The system, LID-1166, is located about 4,900 light-years apart and dates back to when the universe was approximately 1.3 billion years old. This finding, detailed in a study accepted for publication in Nature Astronomy, highlights the challenges of observing such systems due to surrounding gas and dust. The black holes are active and accumulating matter, suggesting they are part of two galaxies on the verge of merging. This discovery could shed light on how supermassive black holes reached significant sizes shortly after the Big Bang.
