Bucharest's City Hall has one year to create a new mobility map, establishing Low Emission Zones (LEZ) that may impose higher taxes or restrictions on polluting vehicles. The Urbanism Code mandates these changes for major cities, with two main scenarios proposed for Bucharest's LEZ delineation. The first scenario focuses on the central traffic ring, potentially restricting access for highly polluting vehicles. The second scenario could apply to the entire city, affecting all vehicles entering. Supporters argue this will significantly reduce air pollution, as many cars in Bucharest are over 10-15 years old. Three implementation scenarios are suggested: a total ban on the oldest vehicles, moderate restrictions for older Euro 4 vehicles, and a future vision allowing only electric or Euro 6 vehicles in central areas. Mayor Ciprian Ciucu emphasizes the need for LEZs to improve air quality, citing successful models from other cities.
