A recent IMF report indicates that Moldova is ahead of Ukraine in the EU accession race. Moldova is now grouped with Western Balkan candidates, reflecting its faster progress. Both countries opened two clusters related to EU integration, focusing on rule of law and foreign relations. IMF Director Kristalina Georgieva noted that Moldova shares similar characteristics with the Western Balkans. Currently, nine countries hold official candidate status for EU membership, with Moldova and Ukraine among them, while others like Turkey face stalled processes. Significant reforms in democracy and law are required for all candidates to join the EU.
