A federal judge in San Francisco approved a $1.5 billion settlement by Anthropic over a class action regarding unauthorized book use for training its chatbot, Claude. This is the largest settlement in U.S. copyright litigation history. The case marks the first major lawsuit in the U.S. concerning the use of copyrighted works for AI training to conclude with an agreement, amidst numerous lawsuits from authors and publishers. Authors sued Anthropic in 2024, claiming the company used pirated copies of their books. Although a judge ruled the training constituted fair use, Anthropic was found to have illegally retained over seven million pirated books. Some authors contest the settlement's adequacy and continue separate lawsuits against Anthropic.
