A study from the UK indicates that prolonged sitting is linked to a 9% higher risk of cancer-related death for each additional hour of sedentary behavior. Researchers found that uninterrupted sedentary time poses greater health risks compared to shorter, interrupted periods. The study analyzed data from over 91,000 participants, revealing that prolonged sitting correlates with higher cancer mortality, particularly for obesity and diabetes-related tumors. Conversely, interrupted sedentary behavior showed a lower risk. Replacing one hour of prolonged sitting with light activity could reduce cancer death risk by 12%. The findings suggest that both the duration and distribution of sedentary time are crucial for health outcomes.
