Mining poses a significant threat to over 12,000 species globally, including nearly 6,000 already classified as endangered. Researchers from Australia and the UK combined global mining activity maps with data on threatened species, revealing that mining occurs in areas of high biodiversity. The study indicates that 28% of the ranges of threatened species overlap with mining zones, with over 100 species having at least 75% of their range affected. Future mining projects could expose more than 3,000 threatened species to mining risks, highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive assessments of mining's impact on conservation efforts worldwide.
