A recent study published in Science reveals a paradox regarding climate change in European mountains: while the total number of plant species is increasing, characteristic alpine species are disappearing. The research, involving data from the Carpathians, monitored vegetation over two decades across 62 mountain peaks. It found that global warming allows lower-altitude plants to move to higher elevations, leading to an increase in species diversity. However, this is accompanied by a rise in local extinctions of cold-adapted species, indicating a potential 'extinction debt' from past environmental changes.
