A study involving the University of Deusto found that newborns' brains respond more strongly to the cries of other babies than to speech. This challenges previous beliefs about the significance of human speech from early life. The research, published in Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience, included an experiment with 25 newborns and 27 Italian adults. While adults showed stronger brain activity in response to spoken phrases, newborns exhibited a stronger response to crying. This surprising finding suggests that newborns may react more to behaviors they can produce themselves, such as crying, compared to speech they have heard in the womb.
