Riding bicycles on highways is prohibited due to the significant speed difference between vehicles and cyclists, which poses a serious risk of fatal accidents. Highways allow speeds up to 130 km/h, and drivers do not expect to encounter slow-moving vehicles. Additionally, bicycles lack impact protection, and strong winds from larger vehicles can destabilize cyclists. The emergency lane is also off-limits for cyclists, as it is reserved for emergency vehicles. This prohibition is outlined in Romanian law.
