He died in a train accident in 1916 while trying to save others during a chaotic evacuation from German-occupied Bucharest. The villa, featuring stunning architectural details, has been well-preserved and is currently for sale. It has served various purposes over the years, including housing embassies and public institutions. Cătuneanu, a notable naval officer, contributed significantly to hydrography in Romania, and a naval vessel bears his name in his honor. The tragic train accident, known as the Ciurea disaster, resulted in over 1,000 fatalities, marking a dark chapter in Romanian history.
