A study reveals that economic espionage by East Germany in the 1970s and 1980s boosted its economy by 7.4% by 1988. The research indicates that industrial value added was 22.3% higher due to espionage, equating to 20.2 billion East German marks. The STASI helped companies acquire valuable scientific and technical information, leading to increased productivity and investment. However, this did not significantly enhance success in Western markets. The economic benefits also extended to supplier and customer networks, generating an estimated annual return of around 330,000 euros per valuable piece of information.
