Researchers have developed light-activated molecules that can restore some visual functions in blind animals, using eye drops instead of injections. This 'molecular prosthesis' could offer a simpler treatment for vision loss caused by retinal diseases. The method, known as photopharmacology, allows these compounds to mimic the function of lost photoreceptors, enabling animals to perceive light again. While promising, the compounds do not cure the underlying causes of blindness. Further studies are needed to ensure safety and effectiveness in humans.
