Spain is overhauling its migration and asylum procedures following a crisis in Ceuta, where up to 80,000 migrants arrived in July. The government aims to reduce asylum processing times from two to three years to a maximum of 12 weeks and expedite return procedures for rejected applications. This reform aligns Spanish law with the European Migration and Asylum Pact adopted in 2024. The new rules are intended to streamline bureaucracy while protecting the rights of asylum seekers. The changes will particularly affect Ceuta and Melilla, where asylum seekers will remain in designated centers during processing. The reform also seeks to prevent misuse of the asylum system, especially by economic migrants posing as asylum seekers.
