Spain has recorded an unprecedented 61 days of heatwave conditions in 2026, surpassing the previous record of 41 days set in 2022. The summer of 2026 was the hottest since records began in 1961, with an average temperature of 24.5°C. Four heatwaves affected the mainland and the Balearic Islands, with extreme temperatures occurring nearly two-thirds of the summer days. The most intense heatwave lasted most of July, impacting 37 provinces. The Canary Islands experienced a separate five-day heatwave in August. The trend of increasing temperatures is evident, with the hottest summers occurring in the 21st century, and over 5,200 heat-related deaths reported this summer, the highest since monitoring began in 2015. Scientists attribute these extreme weather events to climate change, which is particularly severe in Europe.
