Sorana Cîrstea was eliminated in the US Open round of 16 but may achieve her career-best WTA ranking next week. Jessica Pegula won the match 6-3, 6-4. Currently ranked 15th, Cîrstea could maintain this position if Iva Jovic and Naomi Osaka are also eliminated. She has 2464 points, two spots higher than her previous ranking. Cîrstea is the only Romanian player in the WTA Top 20 since Simona Halep's retirement.
