Portuguese researchers are exploring a method to store surplus renewable energy in porous rocks underground, potentially transforming them into large-scale energy reservoirs. This approach utilizes compressed air to fill rock cavities, allowing energy to be stored and later released to generate electricity when needed. The study indicates significant potential for energy storage, with estimates suggesting a capacity of up to 1 TWh at depths of 3,000 meters. This technology could enhance energy stability and support the transition to renewable sources, addressing the growing demand for energy storage in Europe. Researchers are currently identifying suitable geological formations in Portugal for practical application.
