Hungarian authorities plan to sink two barges in the Danube near the Paks nuclear plant to temporarily raise water levels and prevent turbine shutdowns due to severe drought. The plant is currently operating at 25% capacity, and forecasts indicate critical water levels could lead to further operational issues. This temporary measure aims to ensure adequate cooling water for the facility. Additionally, the government plans to construct a submerged dam to maintain water levels in the future. Similar challenges have been faced by Romania's Cernavodă nuclear plant, which also attempted to raise water levels by sinking barges, but with limited long-term success. These situations highlight the vulnerability of nuclear plants reliant on natural water sources for cooling during extreme weather conditions.
