Residents of Bucharest are increasingly alarmed by the rising presence of rats in their neighborhoods, prompting discussions about public health and safety measures. A viral video from Sector 5 showing dead rats sparked outrage, while a woman in Sector 3 reported a rat entering her apartment through the toilet. In response to growing complaints, local authorities are considering regulations requiring pest control companies to disclose their activities. The issue appears widespread, with 216 reports of rat sightings in 2026 alone. The cost of pest control services is significant, with apartment treatments ranging from 150 to 400 lei, and basement interventions exceeding 1,000 lei. Areas like Militari and Vitan-Dudești are particularly affected, making encounters with rats a common experience for many residents.
