A recent report indicates that small modular reactors (SMRs) will contribute 25% of new global nuclear capacity, with Romania leading the way through its pilot project in Doicești. This technology is transitioning from theoretical to practical, promising flexible construction costs and quicker installation compared to traditional plants. Romania aims to leverage this advancement strategically, transforming a former coal plant into a modern nuclear hub. The Doicești project, developed with American investors, will provide clean energy to the national grid, offsetting the closure of outdated lignite facilities. The SMR facility will have a total capacity of 462 MW, with an initial pilot module of 77 MW.
