Focșani is the only city in Romania that belonged to two countries simultaneously, divided by the Milcov River for centuries. It played a significant role in the history of the country, particularly during the Union of the Principalities in 1859. Initially, it consisted of two towns, one in Wallachia and the other in Moldavia, each serving as the capital of different counties. The city was officially unified in 1862, becoming the capital of Putna County. Archaeological discoveries reveal an underground network of tunnels used for trade, particularly smuggling, between the two regions. The city’s historical significance is commemorated by the Obelisk of Union in the central square, which marks the former border.
