In 1978, the village of Geamăna was evacuated to create a tailings pond for Europe's largest copper mine. Today, only the church's upper part remains visible above the toxic waters that submerged the village. Over 1,000 residents were displaced, lured by promises of wealth, but many never received the compensation they were promised. Now, only about 20 people live in the valley, watching as the contaminated lake expands annually, covering homes, schools, and cemeteries. The once vibrant village is now a toxic wasteland, with red and blue waters engulfing the memories of Geamăna.
