The designated Prime Minister denies claims that his 2014 European Parliament campaign was funded by former mayor Gheorghe Ștefan, known as "Pinalti." Mureșan asserts he has never met or received money from Ștefan, labeling the allegations as an "urban legend." In June, Ștefan claimed he contributed €100,000 to Mureșan's campaign, initially intended for another candidate. Elena Udrea also supported claims of funding for Mureșan's campaign.
