CNSAS has revealed that thousands of Romanians, particularly from Timiș County, fled to West Germany before the Revolution. Between 1987 and 1989, over 47,000 requests for emigration were submitted, with 35,486 approved. Sibiu had the highest number of blocked applications, totaling 28,658. Many Romanians used various methods to escape, including illegal border crossings, with Timiș County recording 1,138 successful cases. Notable escapees included members of the band Phoenix. The documents highlight the significant bureaucratic hurdles faced by those seeking to leave Romania during the communist regime.
