A researcher from the University of Manchester is working on detecting brain tumors through a simple tear analysis. Petra Hamerlik, inspired by her father's late diagnosis, aims to identify tumors before symptoms appear. The idea emerged in 2012 after a conversation about analyzing tears for eye diseases. Hamerlik hypothesized that changes in the brain due to tumors could be reflected in tear fluid. A study involving around 500 participants was conducted, successfully identifying tumors in some cases. However, the test may take a decade to reach patients, as researchers need to confirm its accuracy against other neurological conditions. Hamerlik hopes treatments will be available by then.
