The U.S. Senate has passed sanctions against Russia's oil industry, supported by the late Senator Lindsey Graham. The legislation received overwhelming bipartisan support, with 86 votes in favor and 11 against. It targets countries purchasing Russian oil and imposes a 500% tariff increase. The sanctions also restrict travel for Russian officials, including President Putin. Graham's sister, Darline, emphasized the law's intent to force countries to choose between doing business with the U.S. or buying cheap Russian energy. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer stated that the sanctions aim to weaken Russia's war efforts in Ukraine.
