The Spanish Senate rejected a friendship treaty with France during President Macron's state visit, with 142 votes against and 106 in favor. The opposition, led by the Popular Party and Vox, opposed a clause inviting government members to each other's councils. The treaty was initially signed in January 2023 and had been ratified by both countries' lower houses. Despite the opposition, Spanish courts deemed the treaty constitutional shortly before Macron's visit. France has similar treaties with Germany, Italy, and Poland, while Spain has only signed one with Portugal and Morocco.
