The Romanian Senate approved a legislative initiative allowing citizenship-related disputes to be adjudicated in local courts, easing the backlog at the National Citizenship Authority. Over 150,000 citizenship applications are pending, with many dating back to 2017-2021. The average processing time for these applications has reached over three years. The initiative aims to decentralize the judicial process, providing a more efficient resolution for applicants, particularly those from Bessarabia, who seek to reclaim their citizenship rights. The project will now proceed to the Chamber of Deputies for further consideration.
