The European Commission is closely monitoring electricity supply security in Hungary, Romania, and Southeast Europe due to drought conditions. Romania's Energy Secretary Cristian Bușoi highlighted the need for emergency mechanisms and requested the Commission's approval to keep coal power units operational beyond August. The situation remains tense but stable, with low water levels impacting energy production. Bușoi also called for a regional assessment of production capacities and cross-border support mechanisms. Additionally, the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant's Unit 2 may shut down soon due to critical water levels in the Danube. Former Energy Minister Bogdan Ivan suggested activating the European energy solidarity mechanism to assist affected countries.
