The Jiu Water Basin Administration will lead a cross-border project between Romania and Bulgaria aimed at enhancing biodiversity and ecosystem resilience against droughts and extreme weather. The project, funded by the Interreg VI-A Romania-Bulgaria program, has a budget of over €3.39 million and will last 35 months starting from September 25, 2026. A key component for Romania includes a feasibility study for reconnecting the Jieț River with the Jiu River. The initiative addresses climate change impacts on habitats and species along the Danube, focusing on improving water availability and ecosystem resilience. The project will also involve habitat restoration, pollution reduction, and the implementation of nature-based solutions.
