Sealand, a former military fort in the North Sea, was declared an independent principality by Roy Bates in 1967. Despite lacking land and resources, it has developed its own flag, constitution, and currency. The British court ruled in 1968 that it had no jurisdiction over Sealand, marking a de facto recognition of its status. Sealand faced a coup attempt in 1978 but was recaptured by Bates. Although it has created a brand and offers digital citizenship, it has never achieved official state recognition. Its ambitious data haven project, HavenCo, ultimately failed due to practical challenges.
