The Conservation Carpathia Foundation's genetic monitoring in the Southern Carpathians revealed 24 wolves and significant pack reorganization. The study, ongoing since 2017, utilized non-invasive methods to analyze DNA from biological samples, providing insights into wolf population dynamics and territory use. In the 2024-2025 season, nine smaller packs emerged from six known families, indicating a complex social structure. The population density was estimated at 1.46 wolves per 100 km², down from previous years, suggesting potential loss of experienced individuals. Genetic analysis showed no recent hybridization with dogs, indicating a healthy wolf population. Long-term monitoring is crucial for understanding population changes and ensuring coexistence with humans.
