New electronic road toll system TollRo became operational in Romania on October 1, 2026, affecting heavy goods vehicles over 3.5 tons. The toll is calculated based on distance traveled and vehicle characteristics. The system was tested prior to launch, ensuring optimized payment processes. TollRo offers two payment options: a pre-purchased route ticket or distance-based charging via a mobile app. Rovinieta remains valid for other vehicle categories, and existing rovinietas retain their validity. CNAIR warns against incorrect bank transfers for toll payments, which may lead to penalties. Additional functionalities are expected by January 15, 2027, enhancing interoperability with EU toll systems.
