Starting in 2027, Formula 1 races will be shorter, with a new standard distance of 290 kilometers instead of 305. This change, approved by the FIA, will reduce the number of laps drivers complete. Additionally, the maximum duration for a Grand Prix will no longer be capped at three hours, although the two-hour limit for actual racing time remains. This aims to enhance viewer experience during interruptions. Free practice sessions will also gain flexibility, allowing extensions if disrupted. Furthermore, the requirement for gearbox homologation will be removed, promoting development freedom for suppliers.
