Starting August 2026, the electronic identity card will become the primary document for Romanian citizens, while the classic ID will only be issued in exceptional cases. The electronic card will be free and will also serve as a health card replacement. This change is part of the government's digitalization plan, aiming to increase the use of electronic IDs. The new card features a secure chip, enhancing data protection and reducing the risk of forgery. It will also facilitate access to digital public services and allow electronic signatures. The classic ID will incur a fee of 39 lei for justified requests, while the transition to the new system will occur gradually.
