The European Commission has suggested that pensioners with pensions below 2,000 lei should also pay health insurance contributions to increase the budget for public sector salary increases. This is necessary to cover a 4 billion lei shortfall for the planned salary recalculations starting January 2027, affecting 1.3 million public employees. Currently, only pensioners with pensions over 3,000 lei pay these contributions, which are calculated at 10% of the amount exceeding this threshold.
