This initiative aims to utilize abandoned mines for agriculture, potentially reducing energy costs associated with traditional vertical farming. The project is part of a broader effort to double global food production by 2050, especially in light of recent agricultural losses in England. The Boulby Underground Laboratory, where the farm is located, also supports various scientific research projects, including advancements in quantum technology. Expansion plans for the facility are underway, with a new mine expected to provide significantly more space by 2030.
