The adjustment, effective from October 15, aims to attract and retain political leaders. For new ministers, the raise could amount to nearly 100,000 Singapore dollars, increasing their annual income to about 1.2 million Singapore dollars. Wong emphasized the importance of maintaining competitive public service salaries to ensure effective governance. He also announced he will donate his salary increase for the next five years. The last salary adjustment for politicians was in 2012, and Wong highlighted the need for attractive political roles to secure future leadership.
