A new study from the University of Edinburgh and the University of Bristol suggests a biological cause for chronic back pain, linked to genetic changes affecting intervertebral discs. Researchers found that alterations in certain genes, particularly those involved in collagen IX production, lead to spinal anomalies. This process results in the hardening of discs, reducing flexibility and causing pain. Current treatments for intervertebral disc degeneration are limited, with surgery being the main option. The study used genetically modified zebrafish to observe spinal changes, revealing that structural modifications occur earlier than previously thought. Promisingly, a medication for osteoporosis reduced mineral accumulation in the fish's spine, highlighting potential targets for future therapies.
