Air raid shelters in Moscow and St. Petersburg are being renovated with significant funding amid increased drone attacks from Ukraine. Public procurement data reveals that 39 million rubles (approximately 400,000 euros) were allocated for the restoration of nine facilities in Moscow's Southwest administrative region. The renovations, set to be completed by November 30, include upgrades to entrances, interior walls, doors, and utility systems. Additional funds have been designated for shelters in Novogireevo, and a major renovation of a 1971 shelter in New Moscow is planned. In St. Petersburg, the metro operator is seeking contractors to build bomb shelters in nine stations, adapting them for civil defense requirements. The civil defense infrastructure in both cities largely dates back to the 20th century, comprising command bunkers and civilian shelters, including metro stations.
