Garry Kasparov and former Russian deputy Ilya Ponomarev were reportedly targets of a Kremlin assassination plot in the U.S. U.S. authorities informed Kasparov this summer about the threat, leading to special protection for him. Ponomarev, who opposed Crimea's annexation, faced a more advanced plan. Five men linked to Russian intelligence were charged with conspiracy to commit terrorism, with some also accused of conspiracy to commit murder. The plot involved surveillance of locations in Washington, with a $40,000 offer for Kasparov's assassination, but it failed when the recruited individual refused to proceed. Another target was to be killed in Vilnius for $25,000.
