Russia has initiated legal action against the EU regarding frozen sovereign reserves while Europe develops a mechanism to hold Moscow financially accountable for its war in Ukraine. The Central Bank of Russia filed a lawsuit at the EU Court against provisions of the latest sanctions package, which allows EU courts to refuse recognition of certain Russian court rulings. The dispute centers on Euroclear, which holds significant Russian assets frozen in Europe. The EU aims to keep these assets immobilized until Russia compensates Ukraine for war damages, linking them to a €90 billion loan for Ukraine's defense and budget needs. Ukraine will repay this loan only after receiving reparations from Russia.
