Starting October 1, 2026, Romania will implement significant changes to its national road toll system. The new regulations will eliminate the Fetești-Cernavodă bridge toll and introduce a distance-based toll system for trucks over 3.5 tons, called TollRo. Passenger car tolls will be calculated based on pollution standards, with different rates for vehicles in the same category but with varying emissions. The new law emphasizes the principle of 'the polluter pays', incorporating environmental costs into toll calculations. Existing tolls will cease to be valid under the old system, with provisions for refunds for unused periods. The new system aims for interoperability with EU toll systems starting January 15, 2027.
