Romanians have significantly reduced their spending in June 2026 compared to the previous year, with a 5.7% decline in retail sales. This decrease spans food, non-food items, and fuel. The National Institute of Statistics reports that the most substantial drops were in fuel sales, which fell by 8.6%, and food, beverages, and tobacco, which decreased by 6.3%. Overall, the first half of 2026 saw a 5.6% reduction in retail turnover compared to the same period in 2025. Despite a slight increase of 0.5% from May 2026, adjusted figures show a 1.2% decline in retail sales, driven by lower sales in food and non-food categories.
