In the first half of 2026, Romanians returned over 2.4 billion packaging units through the Deposit Return System (SGR), achieving an 82% collection rate. This marks an increase from 79% in the same period last year. The highest returns were recorded in Bucharest, followed by Ilfov, Timiș, Cluj, and Constanța. The SGR infrastructure now covers 92% of localities with over 1,500 residents, facilitating access nationwide. All collected materials are sent to recycling facilities to be transformed into secondary raw materials. RetuRO, the SGR administrator, operates on a not-for-profit basis, reinvesting any profits into system development.
